J. Press began in 1902 in front of the gates of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. There is no way to briefly summarize its amazing history from that day to this, but the facts tell all, and the facts are that this company has produced products that have endured for over 100 years, spanning the turn of the century. In this brochure, we review some of its history and introduce some of the classical archives that we received from the U.S.

BEWARE OF THE WOLVES IN THEIR J. PRESS TWEED.

In New Haven, Connecticut in 1902 J.Press was founded by Jacobi Press in front of the gates of Yale University.. Today it is a well-established men's clothing company with 115 years of history. Within its first three decades, J. Press had successfully launched stores in New York City and Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1935 it opened its Princeton store at the request of Princeton University. Showing no signs of slowing down, it began selling all across the U.S. in the late 1940s through trunk shows and hotels from coast to coast. In 1968 its West Coast branch opened in San Francisco. The J.Press style is embraced by men young and old, F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby and famous for his involvement in high society, wrote to his daughter to "beware of the wolves in their J. Press tweed" when she entered a well-known boarding school. J. Press became emblematic of the clothing worn by attractive men at the time.

[No.03]MAGEE OF DONEGAL

From the earliest days, J. Press has collaborated with Hickey Freeman and Southwick the renowned high-end suit factories, to produce their made-in-America products. From the beginning, J. Press, which has always excelled in clothing made of various tweeds, has also worked with established textile brands and weaving factories. (1)Sport coat from an early developmental stage of "Donegal Mist", one of the tweed products produced by Magee of Donegal. This brand was founded in County Donegal, Ireland, and represents the regional Donegal tweeds. (2)Sport coat made with Harris Tweed. Harris Tweed is famous around the world. . This particular coat uses pure virgin wool from Scotland. Unlike the Harris Tweed Authority label that we see today, this coat has the name of the original weaver on it, reminding us of its history. (3)Sport coat from the 1960s, made with Donegal wool. This coat, which evolved from the 1950s version, was created using several types of dyeing processes. The texture elicits a sense of dignity that can only be found in this combination of world-renowned craftsmanship and history.

“HARVARD MAFIA” BRAINS IN IVY STYLE

Even if you are not that interested in fashion history, we think you will enjoy the continuing chapters in the story of this traditional brand. The wearers of these fine suits have included men at the highest levels of the U.S. political arena. When the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, called his experts together for a strategy meeting, the media did not fail to notice these elegantly, traditionally dressed people in their Ivy-style suits. This group became known as the "Harvard Mafia", and it was said that they preferred J. Press suits. In the 1970s a J. Press blazer with the Yale University emblem was presented to the 38th president of the United States, Gerald R. Ford, who had graduated from Yale University Law School, and that blazer became a part of his wardrobe. Bill Clinton, 42nd President of the United States, is also fond of J. Press. During his administration he ordered his presidential suits from J. Press.

1970'S

This suit was made in Canada (by Empire Clothing and S. Cohen) during the 1970s. It is a cotton-polyester blend, which is less expensive than the fabric used in the J. Press line of prestige suits, but after nearly half a century, it has acquired an earthy texture reminiscent of a khaki-type, olive-green vintage piece. Today this suit still has a fresh, casual look; it is indeed a timeless masterpiece that can be enjoyed by two generations.

IF YOU GO WITH A TIE, WEAR A J. PRESS SHIRT.

Shirts and suits are inseparable. Since the 1930s, J. Press has worked with many renowned shirt manufacturers, including, Hathaway, Gant, Ike Behar, Troy, Gitman, Gambert, and New England Shirt. Through these collaborations J. Press has kept its commitment to produce high-quality shirts. One of the factors that set J. Press shirts apart from the rest is the silhouette, with its many fine details. An essential distinguishing feature of a shirt is the collar roll. For example, as the name indicates, the button-down shirt presents a different front view because of the subtle difference created by the buttoned collar tips. This design was originally created for polo players to keep their collar tips out of their faces during games. However, J. Press enhanced the original design with its unique "collar-roll feel", because J. Press has always been meticulous about how the collar looks with a tie. In fact the J. Press reputation was eventually summarized in the popular saying, "If you go without a tie, wear a Brooks Brothers shirt. If you go with a tie, wear a J. Press shirt." In All the President's Men, the 1976 political drama film, Robert Redford chose the J. Press button-down shirt, a sign of the popular credibility of this brand.

DRIVING FORCE OF THE YALE LOOK AND IVY LOOK

The bond between Yale University and J. Press, forged when the brand was first born, eventually became so popular that a new style featuring blazers emerged among young people. This style was called the Yale Look and became a popular formal style among students . The style was then extended to the rest of the Ivy League, meaning the athletic teams from eight elite private universities in the Northeastern U.S. Thus the traditional Ivy Look evolved from the original Yale Look.

The Ivy League refers to the athletic teams from eight elite universities in seven states in the Northeastern U.S., including Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Yale University.

COLLABORATIONS WITH ENGLAND’S PRESTIGE BRANDS

During the 1950s, all J. Press stores carried selected items from Burberry, Barbour, Baracuta, and other prestige English brands. In particular, because the Cambridge store was Burberrys' executive dealer, J. Press produced executive products such as made-to-order stormer coats. These coats are rarely seen today even in the vintage market.

The woven label shows the two big brand names, Burberry and J. Press. The Burberry check, different from their current pattern, is placed in the area that is folded from front to back.
